On which courses are you a tutor? ECDL Taster, Level 1 and 2.

Why did you become a tutor? I was looking for a new challenge and a change of career. I am an engineer by trade but felt it was time to explore another avenue to try and get the satisfaction, joy and appreciation from a job that my partner gets from her role as a Tutor.

What do you think is the most interesting aspect of the courses you deliver? The world is always changing and technology is advancing so fast. Everything is going electronic and people need help and guidance on the basics of computers and software. I want to help them achieve what they need or desire, whether it be for a job or just an understanding of how the technology can help them further their knowledge.

What experiences of your own do you bring to the courses? I spent the best part of 8 years in the navy learning my engineer trade. I believe the experience and knowledge I have regarding computers and software will benefit all students I teach. I am lucky enough to have completed Level 2 ECDL also, so having that knowledge to hand is great. mathematics is one of my strongest subjects so I am hoping I can use that to aid Excel and also my career in the future by teaching the subject. I just cannot describe the fascination of numbers. I love them and to me mathematics is the only universal language everyone understands.

What do you love about working for Somerset Skills and Learning? The joy and appreciation I receive from students and my peers. I have only been in the role 3 weeks as of writing this and I feel this is what I am meant to be doing, helping others who need more help than I do.

What advice would you give to anyone considering your courses? If you're unsure what you want to get out of either Level 1 or 2 then go for the taster. In the short 4 week spell you will learn so much and be able to make up your mind, if you haven’t done so already. Set yourself a personal target and a goal to achieve and once you achieve that you will benefit so much from the joy in what you can use the qualifications for in the outside world.

If you were stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why? Professor Brian Cox. This man is one of the greatest minds in particle physics. He loves mathematics, planets, the solar system, the universe and the fact he also believes, like me, that there is and has to be life out in the universe, maybe even as close as another planet or moon in our own solar system. The reason I would want to be stuck in a lift with him is because I love and believe all those things also.

What is your most annoying habit? Constantly wanting to learn and speaking to my partner or other family and friends about what I have learnt or know, knowing that they either have no clue or do not care in the slightest.
