On which course are you a tutor? Minehead, Childcare Tutor/Assessor

Why did you become a tutor? I think it is a natural progression for anyone working in childcare. I began as a Level 2 key person and always had a thirst to want to progress, not only achieving qualifications but to gain new experiences and challenges. I love working with children but also found mentoring new staff in settings really rewarding. This led to a role as a placement officer and finally as a tutor and assessor with SS&L.

What do you think is the most interesting aspect of the course you deliver? I truly enjoy all parts of it; from meeting the learners, managers, staff and children of some wonderful early year’s settings, to supporting the learners, linking theory to practice in the classroom.

What experiences of your own do you bring to the course? My first experience working in a childcare setting was in 2002. I volunteered at my local nursery setting in Dorset. This led to employment and achieving the Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ Childcare and Education, so it was very much a practical experience similar to the learners today working towards their qualifications, learning on the job – no easy task when I was bringing up two small children! Because of my husband’s job, we moved every couple of years, which offered me new experiences in different settings in the UK and in Germany and the opportunity to complete my Foundation Degree, which led to managing my own settings in 2011. In 2014, I became a placement officer at Norland College and completed my BA Honours in Early Years. This is where I became aware of the importance of my role and how we always need to remember the feelings of ‘learning something new’ - supporting learners is an area I really enjoy. I would like to think that all of my experience in some way or form makes a difference to the way I support the learners in class and in their settings.

What do you love about working for Somerset Skills and Learning? The people. My colleagues that I work with, but probably most of all the learners in our little corner of Minehead.

What advice would you give to anyone considering your course? GO FOR IT!! Start something new, make a difference in a child’s life.

If you were stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why? mmm… this is a hard question to answer. I would probably talk to anyone and find them interesting. I initially thought of my hubbie as I know he will stop me from panicking whilst being stuck in a lift! I’ve recently read a book by Margaret Donaldson, Children’s Minds, and think she would be extremely interesting to have a chat about her views on children’s development.

What is your most annoying habit? Probably using my kitchen table as a desk (to the annoyance of my hubbie)!
