What Is An Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for those aged 16+ who want to gain a qualification and also get experience in a real, paying* job. There is no age limit to undertaking an Apprenticeship, so you can also apply as an older adult too. New rule changes also mean that those holding a degree can take up an Apprenticeship as long as you do this in a subject different to that of your degree.

To become an Apprentice, you'll need to register with the National Apprenticeship Service and you can find our current roles by searching our Vacancies or the Find An Apprenticeship area of the government site.

Depending on the Apprenticeship you do, it can take between one and five years to complete. There is a huge amount of choice too! Apprenticeships are offered in over 1,500 occupations across 170 industries varying from construction to manufacturing through to IT and the creative and digital sectors. At SS&L, we offer Apprenticeships in Childcare, Social Care, Business Administration and Teaching & Learning in Schools.

All Apprenticeships will include elements of on-the-job and off-the-job training leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. Some Apprenticeships will require an assessment at the end of the programme for you to qualify.

*The current apprenticeship minimum wage is £3.50 per hour (rising to £3.70 ph from April 2018), but some companies will pay more.
